DAVID Systems Hydrogen Archive Catalyst (HAC), in conjunction with Sony PetaServe and XDCAM HD systems, provides the necessary translation between the timecodes of multiple broadcast video and audio formats stored within a digital library and the corresponding byte off-sets of the media files stored on Sony’s physical disk and robotic tape storage. Additionally it manages the communication and transfer of files to and from the asset management software which make requests to the archive.

DAVID Systems' leading media production suite extended with Microsoft SharePoint enterprise collaboration

Comprehensive media production workflow and collaboration support raises team efficiency and...

[Munich, April 8, 2009] At the National Association of Broadcasters' (NAB) annual convention in Las Vegas April 20 - 23, DAVID Systems will introduce the integration of its Content Management System - DigaSystem - with Microsoft Office SharePoint Server. The integrated solution enables Web-based content sharing and provides a wide range of content management features such as searching, retrieving and editing media assets in both browse and hi-res quality, even without being connected to the production system. Connecting departments, customers, freelancers, and on-site journalists through the combined functionality of SharePoint and the DigaSystem product line will maximize team efficiency and significantly reduce operating costs.
The integration with SharePoint supports existing SharePoint customers in search of media production functionality as well as DAVID Systems customers that are looking to connect their production departments with other parts of the organization or external partners. The SharePoint integration enables journalists, whether on site or in remote correspondent offices, to view or edit material from almost any location in the world where an Internet connection is available. Content in editorial intranets can easily be made accessible to users normally not connected to the production environment.
"DAVID Systems decision to integrate their professional audio and video tools with SharePoint is an excellent example of how developers of broadcast solutions can leverage the Microsoft platform to deliver greater value to customers" stated Rainer A. Kellerhals, Global Media & Entertainment Solutions Lead at Microsoft Corporation. "It is also proof to the fact that broadcast technology and IT are converging. We look forward to working with partners like DAVID Systems on bringing together the best of both worlds and broadcast and IT."
"For our customers the integration with SharePoint offers a genuine added value by improving team efficiency and reducing operating costs - for the big networks operating worldwide as well as for small organizations working with freelancers or employees in home offices," explained Michael Wittmann, CTO of DAVID Systems.
Complementing the content management capabilities of DigaSystem, the integration offers comprehensive workflow and collaboration support. The solution provides SharePoint Web parts with Silverlight plug-ins to search through a table structure similar to DAVID Systems' database backend, thus offering a familiar working environment for both DigaSystem and SharePoint users. Once a file is selected, it can be viewed or edited with DAVID Systems' hi-res video editor, DigaCut MT. Because the integration supports video-centric workflows as well as metadata-focused operations, it is not limited to the broadcast industry and can be used by every other type of organization looking to handle media content.

DAVID Systems announces integration with long-term planning tool Plato 3

Editorial online planning system fully integrated in Broadcast Server environment

[Munich, January 13, 2009] New in DAVID Systems' product portfolio is the interface between their Broadcast Server on-air technology and the online planning system Plato 3 by Plantri. The interface allows for a complete synchronization between program planning and on-air scheduling systems.
Digital media and team-centred production workflows pose a new challenge for program planning in radio and TV. Contributions are edited and maintained by different teams not only up to the time they are transmitted but also for analysis, research and archiving processes after they have been broadcast. Simultaneous, location-independent access to the current planning data, quick rescheduling in case of changes, and a permanent overview of the current topics for the editor-in-chief are only a few of the high demands on a modern broadcast planning software. Plato is a database driven online system for real time editorial planning of radio and television programs which has proven its unconditional reliability in continuous operation in public broadcasters' editorial departments for more than seven years. Plato provides a central tool for all editorial staff for the efficient planning, research and archiving of entire programs, individual segments, contact information, and events equipped with cutting-edge web 2.0 software technology.
DAVID Systems has integrated Plato functionality in their on-air environment as well as in the Database Manager (DBM). Both companies collaborated to develop an interface that allows for a complete synchronization between program planning and on-air scheduling systems. Export of segment metadata and synchronization of segments is done through DBM while export of segment broadcast data and synchronization of broadcast time and slot is done through DigAIRrange. The Broadcast Utility Server imports the broadcast data based on the current rundown. Plato transfers scheduled contributions to the on-air storage which are listed there as virtual entries and aligns them constantly. Changes in the DBM are immediately transferred to the planning system and vice versa. If Plato takes a contribution over to a show, it is automatically transferred to DigAIRrange as well and is available as a placeholder for the producer in the pre-planning area. Changes continue to be aligned between the two systems until the contribution is played out.
"With the Plato integration, we closed the gap between long-term program planning and on-air scheduling", said Thorsten Michaelis, Chief of Support Department at Radio Berlin Brandenburg. "Our Broadcast Server can now take over contributions from the editorial planning automatically including metadata and all that is synchronized in real-time and is always up-to-date."
About Plantri GmbH
Plantri offers eight years of experience of developing editorial planning software for radio stations. Plato has been used at the German public broadcaster Radio Berlin Brandenburg since the year 2000. The reliable data integrity has been proven impressively by uninterrupted operations ever since then.

DAVID Systems enhances Moves Media Technology

Norwegian broadcaster NRK got to the finish line faster during the Olympics using automatic content...

[Munich, September 11, 2008] DAVID Systems Moves Media technology provides a powerful and nevertheless easy-to-use set of applications to exchange media data globally. Whether distributing, transcoding, copying, sending or re-distributing content - all these can be administrated centrally in the same system environment, always using the right tools dedicated to the respective task. Using existing network infrastructure or IP connections to exchange content also results in a significant cost-cutting compared to conventional satellite transfer. With the latest versions of DAVID Systems' Moves Media product family even more functionality has been added. The proven technology is employed by major broadcast networks like Germany's ARD or Radio Free Europe, headquartered in Prague. NRK in Norway relied upon Moves Media applications to speed up their coverage of the Olympic Games in Beijing. 700 hours of TV content were distributed and transcoded fully automated and in the background - without any manual intervention and invisible for the users of the content.
Moves Media applications, in development and use for 11 years now, can be combined not only to bring content from all over the world into the media enterprise, but also to automatically redistribute it within the network to different locations and even to proprietary systems like video servers.
The product family consists of applications to replicate data via WAN or LAN connections, an IP based mailbox system for highly secure, bi-directional file exchange and software for the load balanced transport of data within one or between different systems. All of them are freely combinable, centrally administered, and allow full background operation. Moves Media applications are executing their tasks almost invisibly for the editorial staff and come with intelligent features like powerful metadata handling, on-the-fly transcoding or automatic database registration. Nevertheless all these applications are based on standard IT infrastructure integrating seamlessly into existing broadcast environments.
New in the Moves Media portfolio is an AtomFactory bundle which allows seamless MXF based integration of Apple's Final Cut Pro editors into production and playout environments and DigaFTP, an application to import media data from an FTP server.

Not only does Moves Media help to automate content distribution, real-life calculations have shown that the cost saving for satellite transmission was thousands of Euro's a year. That way the investment paid for itself within less than a year.

Moves Media technology has been in regular operation in major broadcasting networks like Germany's ARD or Radio Free Europe with more than 20 language services for many years now. At ARD the audio and video file transfer with more than thousands of files per day is completely operated by Moves Media applications. Recently NRK used Moves Media solutions for their covering of the Olympic Games in Beijing. More than 200 employees in Oslo and Beijing were maintaining 16 feeds with about 20 stories in FTP transfer daily and 700 hours of TV content. Moves Media technology was responsible for transferring content to Oslo as well as for the redistribution within NRK, e.g. to their Internet portal NETT-TV which provided additional 2.300 hours of web streams. All in all NRK transcodes about 200.000 files per year, fully automated in the background and without distracting the journalists and editors from their important tasks.

The Enterprise Solution for QuickTime-MXF Workflows

AtomFactory now available as integrated DigaSystem package

Munich, August 21, 2008 – DAVID Systems’ AtomFactory harmonizes the editing process of Apple’s Final Cut Pro with the MXF-driven workflows of professional IT-based broadcast environments by converting MXF content on-the-fly to QuickTime and vice versa. Useful far beyond format conversion, however, AtomFactory automatically controls background functions that minimize bandwidth consumption, centralize media production, and accelerate workflows to make producing compelling content on Final Cut Pro within tight deadlines seamless and efficient. New in DAVID Systems’ product portfolio is an integrated DigaSystem/AtomFactory bundle to round up exchange and integration functionality in a DigaSystem environment. DigaSystem is DAVID Systems’ multimedia production management platform used by the largest broadcast organizations with more than 15000 seats installed worldwide.
A subset of Hydrogen Media Accelerator (HMA) designed specifically for Final Cut Pro, AtomFactory not only provides edit-while-ingest and playout-while-fusing capability but solves many integration problems. Even in production environments with twenty or more NLEs and additional central processes like ingest from a video server, AtomFactory is the perfect solution. The HMA central services HMA Ingest, HMA Send, and HMA Fusion are employed to share tasks and to intelligently manage resources such as bandwidth management and workstation availability.
HMA Ingest, installed centrally on a server, allows every member of the workgroup to ingest incoming material without having an additional application installed. In that case, only HMA Send and the QuickTime to MXF conversion are installed on every workstation while MXF to QuickTime is operated externally. HMA Send optimizes the traffic between client and server to release the server.
In combination with HMA Fusion, it is even possible to offload the MXF generation to a central system. In such a scenario only the modified parts of the project are sent from Final Cut Pro to this server which is ideal for those broadcasters who receive material in MXF but prefer production in the native QuickTime format. Additionally, many daily tasks can be automated through AtomFactory’s scripting functionality. Whether exporting to third-party systems, archiving, uploading via FTP, or generating backup copies, a few lines of code are enough to push a follow-up action automatically.
There are other helpful and elaborate features: Once the producer has edited his QuickTime project and is ready to export it, he often faces an impossible choice between a seemingly endless list of folders all with cryptic names. AtomFactory reduces the choice to a manageable number of folders with a clear structure with understandable titles. That way, a folder with a follow-up task, for example, can be clearly named as “Send to Playout.” AtomFactory is also configurable with a sequence preset, thus avoiding working with incorrect sequence settings by mistake.
Especially designed for the use in DigaSystem environments are the new bundles to integrate HMA/AtomFactory into the DigaSystem. Supported by DigaTransfer System the bundles allow bidirectional file exchange between Final Cut Pro and DAVID Systems’ content management system including the typical AtomFactory features like edit-while-ingest or playout-while-fusion.
