Whether broadcast journalists and broadcast production professionals know the software as DigAS, DigaSystem® or DAVID, it represents the suite of software tools successfully enabling digital content creation and delivery. Being one of the pioneers of the Radio digitalization era, DAVID Systems solutions today are recognized as a standard for media production, distribution and delivery at leading broadcasters worldwide and are used by over 15,000 media professionals in Europe, the US and Asia.

Munich, Germany – December 15th, 2011 – Since its founding in the early ‘90s, DAVID Systems GmbH has evolved from a start–up to one of the leading suppliers of media production, delivery and distribution software for broadcasters. Michael Wittmann, co-founder and now its Chief Technical Officer looks back: “We (Michael and the other co-founders, Klaus Strobel, Günther Sonderwald, Peter Bienert) started off with the vision of bringing digital technology to existing analog broadcasting environments, but it took some time to convince production professionals at the public stations. I remember very well, how many of the public broadcast officials became “digital tourists” meaning that they regularly visited digitally equipped affiliate public broadcasting stations in order to learn from their workflow and the experiences they had made so far.”
The early years

D.A.V.I.D. GmbH, as the company was known then, recognized the chance to grow into a completely new niche. Anticipating future developments in digital broadcasting from an early stage, DAVID Systems based its software on an open, scalable and modular IT architecture. This early decision was a key selling point, and is still one of its strong differentiators from other broadcast vendors. DAVID’s launch was made in Munich at Antenne Bayern, one the pioneers of private broadcasting in Germany. Andreas Gall, then head of technology at Antenne Bayern and now Chief Technology Officer of Red Bull Media House about his experience with DAVID Systems: “Looking back, it was really risky to rely on an unknown software start-up like DAVID Systems to substantially help build up one of the first fully digital broadcasting stations. However, DAVID Systems’ open IT architecture approach was convincing enough to meet our technical requirements in a very cost-effective way. DAVID delivered as promised and made us go on air as planned.” From that time on, an intensive technical partnership has evolved which still has tremendous impact on the enhancement of the DigaSystem® suite such as the Broadcast Server System or other software applications. One of the latest special requirements of Antenne Bayern was, for example, to support the moderator to segue a hot music mix into a slower, chilled mood. DAVID’s development team has succeeded in realizing this feature through enabling to combine the software modules CartBeat and CartMotion within its TurboPlayer play out software.
The Antenne Bayern project was quickly followed by the ARD Sternpunkte project in Frankfurt and Bayerischer Rundfunk. The latter’s use the broadcast server software TurboPlayer as the only and complete production and play out system for all channels. “DAVID Systems as a Munich-based company was far ahead of other vendors which gave us the great advantage to have solved many initial problems very quickly on the spot. The growing demands of the BR were certainly a kick to new developments and an expansion of DAVID’s portfolio" said Herbert Tillmann, Director of Production and Technology of the Bayerische Rundfunk. With the introduction of Edigas, the predecessor to DAVID Systems’ successful DigaSystem® suite, at the ORF, DAVID was established as a respected software vendor in the industry.
The first wave of the digital revolution
During the nineties, increasing competitive pressure emerged from commercial broadcasters which forced major public broadcasters to cut expenses and demand new synergies from vendors. Due to shrinking resources, acquisition, production and distribution workflows needed to be streamlined in order to increase efficiency. Also, private broadcasting stations like Radio FFN, in Europe, for example, were just ramping up and very interested in digital broadcasting technology. DAVID Systems addressed these simultaneous industry movements by developing an open and highly customizable broadcasting solution for both public and private broadcasting stations. As these stations grew, more and more individual workflow scenarios and third party products were easily integrated into the open architecture of the DigaSystem®, ensuring a stable and extensible environment. Over the past 20 years, DAVID Systems has become the indispensable partner for thousands of journalists and media professionals. Today, customer installations range from a handful to over two thousand production workstations. Vast installations at major public broadcasting stations such as the BR, SWR, WDR, ORF, SRG, NRK, SvR and NPR function seamlessly and in concert, making last-minute decisions and input effortless.
Privately owned, financially independent, growing again
Despite many change in the company ownership over the years, DAVID Systems always managed to maintain and expand its market position due to its solid relationship with its core customers. After completing a Management Buy Out from SGI Japan, the Internet and Broadcast professional Vincent Benveniste* was appointed as Chief Executive Officer in April 2009. Together with the two other ownership partners, Anthony Savelli*² and Stephan Schindler*³, Vincent Benveniste was able to turn the company around to become financially independent again with consistent growth in most business metrics.
Ready to enable interactive, visual radio
Benveniste is now positioning the company to address new business opportunities. Benveniste on the on the development of the industry: “I think we are now in the second wave of the digital broadcasting revolution. The hardware and technology battles have been fought. Content needs to be simultaneously available on all platforms – both stationary and mobile. Simulcast, HbbTV, DAB and Visual Radio are the opportunity of today’s broadcasting stations. Engineers in charge of production and distribution need solutions that can address these channels at affordable “radio-like” costs. Efficient technical strategies such as DAVID Systems is offering since 20 years, are making the next digital Radio revolution – a dynamic tri-media environment happen”.
Furthermore, DAVID Systems has, during the last decade, spent significant efforts in supporting the transformation of analog broadcasting to digital. In fact, the future of Radio has already begun at some stations such as for example with the implementation of the BR on3 youth wave in 2009. Herbert Tillmann underscores his special requirements on external partners: "In implementing the new concept we were glad that DAVID Systems was already part of the game from the beginning of the project. It was very important for us to discuss the specifics of this ambitious tri-media project with our partner as early as possible in order to get a feeling of the feasibility. Therefore the continuous technical input of DAVID Systems product managers at the planning stage was voluntarily taken into account.” As in previous projects, the modular design of the DigaSystems® with its open interfaces has proven to be perfect for the new tri-media requirements of the ON3 station."
The next generation of Radio will likely be represented by an interactive visual radio application, with non-disruptive audio content at the heart and cost-effective tri-media content, ubiquitously delivered to the consumer.
DigaSystem® - a suite of tools
DAVID’s flagship product family DigaSystem® is the state-of-the-art solution for managing tri-media. More than 100 individual, integrated, or stand-alone software modules ensure that individual customer requirements are met. This ranges from simple requirements like importing music and metadata from CDs with DigaGrabber, to more complex functions like automatically importing multi-format content from foreign correspondents into the DigaSystem® with DigaMailbox IP, and high availability file exchange management, both manual and automated, such as within Germany’s major public broadcaster, ARD. A suite of audio and video editors support tri-media initiatives at stations by making it possible to produce audio and video content for terrestrial broadcast and for the Internet. They also seamlessly integrate with 3rd party craft editors when needed. Additionally, the DigaSystem is used as a content management system by several TV stations.
DAVID Customer Solutions and Sales Programs
Foreseeing further changes in the industry - especially on the customer side - DAVID Systems has assumed major structural changes, beginning in 2009, in order to be even more flexible and customer-oriented. In addition to an integrated Channel Partner Program, broadening the company’s market reach, DAVID set up a Customer Solutions Group (CSG) to leverage DAVID products, solutions and services, both in design and implementation. The CSG team takes care of the technical evaluation of the customers’ workflow requirements and creates specially designed solutions and workflow adaptations in alignment with its partners. Upon commissioning and acceptance by the customer, the CSG team is responsible for the technical support of the entire DigaSystem® workflow, interfacing with the customer’s technical departments (system administrators) as well as the creative teams (journalists & editors).
Sharing experiences with customers and industry leaders
Starting two years ago, DAVID Systems has sought to improve the interface with long term customers relationships and has expanded the annual customer conference into a three day long customer-focused event including an independent industry forum named “The Tri-Media Symposium”, hosted at Bayerische Rundfunk the last two times. The purpose of this conference is to network on business aspects, to learn about new developments, discuss best practices and future requirements and to exchange experiences in technical hands-on workshops. In the past, thought-leaders in the broadcasting industry contributed and participated in many lively discussions. These events are part of DAVID Systems’ mission to be a leading authority for digital broadcasting revolution. The third edition of the symposium is being planned for March 2012.With regular exhibitions at the IBC show in Amsterdam and NAB in Las Vegas, DAVID Systems continues to foster openness and seek customer dialogue. Naturally, the company heartily encourages and welcomes contact and comments via its Social Media presences such as Facebook, Twitter, Xing and Linked-in throughout the year.

The new software package release 2010.2 of DAVID Systems adds new features to the complete portfolio of tri-media collaboration solutions. With the goal to enable broadcasters to produce and play-out content faster DAVID Systems takes advantage of file-based production systems and offers QuickIngest for journalists to seamlessly ingest on their PCs.

Munich, Germany – 14 December, 2010 – DAVID Systems, a leading provider of global broadcast solutions, announces the release of its 2010.2 software package. Besides many enhancements and customer requested features, the highlight of the release is a new version of QuickIngest, providing client-based ingesting with seamless video import from Sony XDCAM as well as Panasonic P2 devices.
File-based content production has become standard amongst broadcasters today. QuickIngest was designed to support file-based workflows by accelerating the ingest process and transforming every desk into an ingesting workstation. In this way QuickIngest will help save time and resources as it is no longer necessary for the reporter to schedule ingest tasks with a technician. An added benefit is that the content is stored centrally and can be accessed by any editor virtually immediately. Based upon the MXF standard, QuickIngest supports the two leading device families - Sony XDCAM and Panasonic P2 - providing seamless import from these cameras to a specific storage location or network storage. QuickIngest allows journalists to add metadata during ingest and save the video files directly into DigaSystem®, DAVID Systems’ leading content management system.
QuickIngest delivers an intuitive user interface, customized for journalists in content production, so that virtually no training is necessary. Journalists gain independence, time and resources, and are freed from technology distractions in order to focus on content production and quality.
DigaSystem® continues to build a foundation for increased speed in content production by unifying related broadcast workflows. Also announced with the recent 2010.2 release package, DigaSystem® now provides newsroom integration with ANNOVA’s OpenMedia. To increase the integration possible with the MOS protocol, a new DigaMOS interface was also part of the recent release.
“Reducing complexity and decreasing time needed for content production and distribution affects all workflows from ingesting to planning, scheduling and play-out. At DAVID Systems we cooperate closely with our customers to make sure we cover not only individual broadcast workflow aspects but also detect time reduction potential in all relevant areas that journalists of radio or TV stations are involved in today. QuickIngest is an easy to use tool to smooth acquisition and put the journalist in full control”, says Vincent Benveniste, CEO DAVID Systems GmbH. “The only way to really speed up production is to minimize the islands of technology used within workflows“.
Other news of the 2010.2 release includes features across the wide product range of DAVID Systems to ease tri-media collaboration and real-time content distribution.

At IBC 2010, DAVID Systems will showcase a next generation...

At IBC 2010, DAVID Systems will showcase a next generation tri-media production solution, integrated with Windows Azure for cloud-based content management services and with Microsoft Office 2010 for editorial collaboration.

Munich, Germany – September 10, 2010 – DAVID Systems, a leading provider of global broadcast solutions, will present a preview of their upcoming tri-media production system at IBC 2010, in hall 7, at booth 7.G34, and in Microsoft Corp.’s booth in the Topaz Lounge. The new solution offers Radio and TV stations to use cloud-based content storage and content processing services leveraging Windows Azure, Microsoft’s cloud computing platform, and integrates seamlessly with Microsoft Office 2010 to support collaboration between journalists and editors.
Today, Radio and TV broadcasters need to reduce their costs and complexity of IT, while maintaining the capability to scale storage and server capacities in line with their business needs. At the same time, tri-media production and multichannel distribution have become key success factors for staying competitive.
DAVID Systems is addressing these needs

by extending its new tri-media solution into the cloud, deploying broadcast-specific content management services on Microsoft’s cloud computing platform, Windows Azure, and

by integrating its professional audio and video editing tools with Microsoft’s familiar business productivity environment, Microsoft Office.

The goal is to enable tri-media journalism across locations, devices and formats.
The new DAVID Systems tri-media solution can be integrated with the Microsoft Office System 2010 via the business connectivity services within Microsoft Office 2010. The Microsoft Solution Framework for Editorial Collaboration and Mobile Journalism for Office enables Radio and TV editors and journalists to share story proposals, manage resources, find relevant content, plan event coverage, and schedule outputs through a web-based user interface accessible from both Windows and Mac clients. DAVID Systems also offers the media management and audio/video editing functionality required to support tri-media production and distribution. Using DAVID Systems tools, journalists can ingest, view and edit video content, including voice-over, within a single application environment. As communication is key for creative work, the solution provides for integration with Microsoft Unified Communications, combining e-mail, instant messaging, Voice over IP (VoIP) and video conferencing in a consistent set of communication tools.
“Broadcasters are used to working with IT islands from production to playout. But in times where audiences expect cross-channel coverage and continuous updates, these islands hamper collaboration, delay processes, and increase cost." says Vincent Benveniste, CEO, DAVID Systems GmbH. “Our new tri-media solution combines strong support for editorial collaboration with proven audio and video tools, and, for the first time, gives broadcasters the option of using cloud storage and cloud computing resources. Its web-based UIs are accessible from mobile platforms as well as Windows and Mac desktop clients, from anywhere in the world where journalists can connect to the Internet.”
“We are delighted to host DAVID Systems in our booth at IBC,” said Gabriele Di Piazza, managing director for the Media & Entertainment business in the Communications Sector at Microsoft. “DAVID Systems’ tri-media solution is an excellent example for how our partners are taking advantage of cloud computing by utilizing Windows Azure to address some of the key business challenges broadcasters are facing today: reducing cost and enabling collaboration across sites, teams, and channels.”

At IBC 2010, DAVID Systems is showing the preview of a new production management solution for tri-media collaboration. The new system is designed to easily expand the capabilities of existing installations including those based on DigaSystem, DAVID Systems’ flagship content management system. In addition to the integration of industry-standard tools like Apple’s Final Cut Pro, the new solution provides a service-oriented, scalable and platform-independent framework for tri-media production.

Munich, Germany – August 30, 2010 – DAVID Systems, a leading provider of global broadcast solutions, will present its solutions at IBC 2010, in hall 7, at booth 7.G34, and in Microsoft’s booth in the Topaz Lounge. The new tri-media production system and the integration of 3rd party editing tools is one of DAVID Systems’ demo highlights. This new solution addresses the needs of broadcasters and media houses to reduce complexity and to enable seamless workflows across multiple formats, tools and platforms for tri-media production and multi-channel distribution.
It combines platform-independent thin clients with intelligent background processes using a new service-oriented architecture (SOA). The proven concept distinguishes between thin clients, services and workers for maximum flexibility, integration and scalability, and leverages industry-standard technology from Microsoft. Because of this new architecture, the system can be used to expand existing installations, including those based on DigaSystem, and become the new foundation over time, providing broadcasters and media houses with more flexibility in addressing their evolving workflow requirements. The result is a dynamic system with more powerful production capabilities that can help content providers monetize their media assets across an ever-increasing number of distribution channels.
At IBC, DAVID Systems is showing a journalist-oriented production workflow based on this new cross-platform media management system, with project exchange between Apple Final Cut Pro for HiRes editing and a new browser-based, sub-clip editor for LoRes editing. A web-based interface allows users to browse the database on both Windows and Mac clients and enables users to exchange projects between these two platforms. Journalists can first prepare their basic story outline in proxy (LoRes) format using the sub-clip editor, save the project in the DAVID Systems database, and then enable Final Cut Pro stations access to this project for further processing. This workflow frees up journalists’ creativity by reducing complexity in rough news editing and provides a seamless exchange to the next workflow step of HiRes editing with Final Cut Pro.
“While our DigaSystem is an established and well regarded solution for content management in Radio and bi-media production today, this next-generation solution expands these capabilities to address broadcasters’ growing needs for tri-media production. Easy integration with existing installations, as well as the use of 3rd party tools and services based on industry standard technologies, were key in the development to provide this future-proof cross-platform architecture.", says Vincent Benveniste, CEO, DAVID Systems GmbH. “Today’s broadcast solutions need to focus on the editor’s needs and enable tri-media production, exchange and re-purposing with improved collaboration across all platforms.”

At IBC 2010, the two companies will launch a new level of integration of ANNOVA’s OpenMedia Newsroom Computer System (NCS) into the DigaSystem® CMS and On-Air environments, based on the MOS protocol. For Radio stations, this solution improves editorial collaboration in news planning, scheduling, production and playout.
Munich, Germany – August 17, 2010 –The new integration joins together planning and production, and closes the gap between two leading systems in Radio broadcast, simplifying and accelerating workflows from story conception to broadcast and broadband/web distribution. DAVID Systems, a leading provider of global broadcast solutions, and ANNOVA Systems, a leading newsroom provider, will showcase their interoperability at IBC 2010 in Amsterdam.
To deliver news faster, and to serve several distribution channels simultaneously, Radio workflows need to be integrated and provide optimized synergies from planning to playout. With the integration of OpenMedia into DigaSystem, journalists are now enabled to cover their entire story production workflow with one unified solution, starting with pre-planning and story creation in OpenMedia through content research (browse/pre-listen) in DigaSystem. Media objects can be selected from the DigaSystem database and instantly aligned with stories prepared in OpenMedia. Rundown lists with available stories are likewise sent from OpenMedia to DAVID’s Broadcast Server and harmonized with the DigAIRange Radio broadcast scheduling tool. During all of these workflow steps, metadata is kept in sync between both systems.
Interoperability between DigaSystem and OpenMedia is enabled by the Media Object Server Communications Protocol (MOS version 2.8) and implemented via DAVID's DigaMOS application. Using the MOS standard, provides customers with a very flexible and scalable solution which can easily be expanded as MOS evolves.
"Where proprietary islands of applications are bottlenecks and hinder workflow acceleration, DigaSystem's use of the MOS standard is enabling an open and efficient collaboration between all departments involved in news and radio broadcasting," says Vincent Benveniste, CEO, DAVID Systems GmbH. "DAVID's close partnership with ANNOVA Systems demonstrates yet another milestone for DigaSystem on its way to becoming the premier choice for radio news production and tri-media distribution."
Michael Schüller, CEO at ANNOVA Systems expands: “Increased productivity is key for radio stations today. We are excited to add with this partnership another open and smooth route for collaboration from planning of stories, sharing of content all the way to playout. This new integration of OpenMedia and DigaSystem offers streamlined workflows by leveraging existing enterprise environments.”

Munich, Germany – May 27, 2010 – DAVID Systems, a leading provider of global broadcast solutions, announces the release of its 2010.1 software package. The highlights of the release are XDCAM-HD support and Windows 7 / Server 2008 R2 qualification for most DigaSystem® products.
With the support of the XDCAM-HD format in DAVID Systems’ media production, content management and distribution as well as playout products, broadcasters can now easily expand their tri-media workflows towards HD. The support of XDCAM-HD throughout the entire broadcast value chain, including playout, increases efficiency, reduces time-to-air and improves usage of existing resources in news production for broadcast and broadband distribution.
Specifically, new media conversion capabilities – powered by DAVID Systems’ new Media Component Library (MCL) – support XDCAM-HD as well as MPEG2-HD and DVCPro HD formats. Also, read-while-write for all processes is now available in the Moves Media suite of products and new desktop ingest tools can speed up HD workflows by providing journalists with essential file import capabilities.
The qualification of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 for most DigaSystem® components allows DAVID Systems customers to take advantage of the latest operating system enhancements. Existing DigaSystem® users can now easily upgrade their infrastructure to Windows 7 / Server 2008 R2 and simultaneously take their DAVID Systems components to the latest version and benefit from better stability and more features.
„The new 2010.1 release brings a lot of new features to all our products and solutions from production and content exchange to playout. Focus of all product enhancements was to support our customers in delivering more news in less time and helping them to add tri-media production and distribution capabilities to their workflows “, says Vincent Benveniste, CEO DAVID Systems GmbH. „We see time-of-production and the ability to serve multiple channels as two key objectives for our customers today and are committed to continuously evolve our products with these in mind“.
